An arbitration MOOT is a specialized academic competition that simulates an arbitration case, in which law students and graduates, as well as students and graduates from related fields, assume the role of counsel for the parties in arbitral proceedings, faithfully reproducing the stages and dynamics of an arbitration. These competitions focus on complex disputes of a commercial, contractual, or investment-related nature and require participants to draft written submissions and orally defend their arguments in hearings before arbitral tribunals composed of expert arbitrators. Through this practical experience, participants strengthen their knowledge of arbitration law, procedure, legal argumentation, and professional ethics, while developing key skills for the specialized practice of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.
The MOOT LIMA – COMPETENCIA INTERNACIONAL DE ARBITRAJE Y DERECHO INTERNACIONAL ECONÓMICO® is an international academic competition that simulates an arbitral case as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism, within the context of disputes arising under International Economic Law. Through a hypothetical case, participants assume the role of counsel for the parties and analyze conflicts related to international trade, foreign investment, international contracts, and economic relations between States and private actors, integrating rules of international law, economic principles, and arbitration rules.
The competition rigorously reproduces the stages of an arbitration, including the preparation of written submissions and the oral defense of arguments before international arbitral tribunals composed of internationally recognized arbitrators. MOOT LIMA® seeks to strengthen the practical and academic training of participants by promoting mastery of arbitration as an effective tool for resolving international economic disputes and contributing to the development of professionals with a comprehensive, technical, and ethical understanding of International Economic Law and alternative dispute resolution.
Its primary objective is to strengthen the comprehensive training of undergraduate students and graduates in international arbitration and international economic law through the simulation of arbitral proceedings. The competition seeks to develop both technical skills (hard skills), such as legal research, the drafting of written submissions, and legal argumentation, as well as soft skills,including effective communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and the ability to operate in multicultural environments. Likewise, it promotes international academic exchange and exposure to global arbitration practices and standards.
The MOOT LIMA® invites lawyers and professionals with experience in arbitration and international economic law to participate as arbitrators in the First Edition of MOOT LIMA®.
Arbitrators may participate in the evaluation of written submissions and in the Oral Rounds, in accordance with the MOOT LIMA® Rules and the evaluation criteria that will be provided to them in due course.
